WELCOME TO MWALIMU JULIUS K. NYERERE UNIVERSITY OF
AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY (MJNUAT)
Prof. Lesakit S.B MellauACTING VICE CHANCELLOR
I am pleased to welcome you to Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology (MJNUAT), with its headquarters in Butiama District and satellite centres elsewhere in Mara region. The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania (URT), decided to establish this public university in honour of the Father of the Nation, the late Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, First President of the United Republic of Tanzania who believed that agriculture in its broad sense remains a reliable means of livelihood to many Tanzanians in the rural settings. The university strives at being at the centre stage of agricultural transformation in Tanzania, and a regional and global player in innovative and societal responsive Agricultural Education and Training (AET). The University aims at achieving this through embracement of the concepts of the Third or Fourth Generation University. MJNUAT has positioned itself as the “Entrepreneurial University” where the focus in the latter is not only in education, research, outreach and technology transfer through linkage with industry and know-how exploitation, but the university itself will be involved pro-actively in inculcating passion in agriculture, entrepreneurial mindset, behaviour and practices not only to its students and staff, but also in its institutional as well as its structural and organizational set up. The University seeks to further consolidate transition in agribusiness by mounting business mentorship schemes for start-up agri-ventures supported by innovative linkages with financial institutions services in providing pro-poor credit support for start-up agribusiness ventures for young graduate farmers. The university also aims at mounting vocational and life skills to youths and women groups, to catalyse their participation in agribusiness, thereby reducing unemployment rate among youths in the country. In the final analysis, MJNUAT graduates and other trainee cadres will be enabled to be creators of agribusiness-centred job opportunities and providing windows for unlocking business opportunities along agricultural value chains for others. Branding the university as a research, science and innovation hub, together with delivery of business-and competence-centred AET programmes and services will, in the final analysis, enable MJNUAT to operate on the principles of 3rd or 4th Generation University.
